"In God we Trust" is amotto which
we are all very familiar with. First adopted and placed
on American currency in the late 1800's, and a
statement that this country was founded upon. Such a
simple statement; But how true is it for each of us:
Notice that I said "motto" for that is what this
statement originally was meant to be. But we
all know that it is much more. Let's read what the scriptures say about Trust in 2 Samuel 22:
Then David spoke to the
LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD
had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and
from the hand of Saul.
And he said: “The LORD is my rock and my
fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength,
in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
Here David is showing total faith in God through
everything. He first starts with the
statement "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my
deliverer": Let's look at this statement:
First David states:
The LORD" with LORD
in all capital
letters, meaning Jehovah (the self existing
one). With this statement David shows
recognition that God is his LORD, and he
should summit to God's will completely.
Although David did make mistakes as we all
do, he did allow God to guide and control
his life. David became a mighty leader
to the Israelites because of his recognition
towards God, and most important 'his
relationship'. So the question arises; Can you give
God full control of your
life? Is your relationship with God strong
enough to make him your LORD?
Second David states The LORD is my rock
and my fortress and my deliverer. Let's look at the following words:
Rock - Greek (Petra) depicting a strong
foundation. In the New Testament is usually
figuratively used in speaking of Christ.
Rock -
Hebrew (tsuwr or tsur) depicting
a strength, refuge
Fortress - depicts
a fortified place, a strong place used for
shelter from harm.
Deliverer -
depicts one who can deliver us from harm.
One who will protect you in all situations.
As we see above,
David's statement shows total faith and
trust
in God. He is stating that The LORD will
protect him, The LORD will deliver him, and
The LORD is his fortress. When the military
is in battle they feel protected in their
fortress. Here we have the same scenario.
David realizes that life is a battle and
without God as our fortress, the battle is
lost. So in other words David realizes that
'God has got his back'.
In verse 3: David again
is showing his faith: The God of my strength in
whom I trust. And I love the explanations David
is giving:
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
Now this is total Trust
in God, can we say the same? We 'hope' and
believe we can, but the truth is that when
situations arise in our lives we start to doubt
our own beliefs in God.
First question that pops up in our minds is
"Does God really exist" and/or "If God did love
me why would he let this happen". Did David have
such an easy life to have such trust in God? No,
he was running away from King Saul who wanted
David dead. But this did not stop David from
having total faith in God.
I know that there are times in our lives, when
situations arise
that there is no hope. But this is
true "there is not hope", only 'Faith' and
"'Trust in God" will get us
through. Especially if we let God be LORD of our
lives, and the fortress which we stand upon.
Sometimes God will allow things to happen to
strengthen us. We all know that Paul was first
an important Jew, persecuting the Christians,
and then called by Jesus to be a mighty Apostle.
But even Paul was arrested, put in prison, and
persecuted for preaching the Gospel of Christ. After all this he was given an infirmity
(sickness). But this did not stop Paul from
preaching and keeping his trust and faith in
God.
The Thorn in the Flesh: 2Corinthians 12
7) And lest I should
be exalted above measure by the abundance of the
revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to
me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be
exalted above measure. (8)
Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord
three times that it might depart from me.
(9) And He said to
me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My
strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore
most gladly I will rather boast in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest
upon me. (10)
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in
reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in
distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am
weak, then I am strong.
So let's get to the following important
questions:
Is this statement "In God we Trust" just a motto to
you, or do you truly trust God with all your heart and
soul?
If you truly "Trust in God", are you giving him full
control of your life?
Is God your rock, and your fortress
whom you build your life in, or is he just a convenient
pit-stop when you're trying to get out of your
situations?
Is God the LORD of your life, or is god the lord of
your life?
For us to
give total trust to anyone is usually very difficult,
but remember God is not just anyone, he is our creator,
and creator of everything. So why shouldn't God be
the LORD
of our lives. It is time we stop depending on ourselves,
and start depending on God, for depending on ourselves
will only get us farther from our LORD. We need to make
our relationship with God stronger and not weaker.
